Balancing purpose and profit

At Projects, we're all about creating spaces where work feels less like a chore and more like a community-driven adventure. As we provide workspaces to thousands of organisations, we realise the significant influence we have over the environment and the communities we serve. Whilst we're definitely not claiming to have all the answers, we are proud to be on a journey of learning and growing, always striving to do better by considering the needs of all our stakeholders.

Projects has certified as a B Corp - now what?

We're thrilled to share that we've joined the B Corp movement earlier this year, a milestone worth celebrating together. Becoming a B Corp means that we're committed to balancing purpose and profit. Being part of the movement of businesses who share a similar ethos makes it even more enjoyable (what can we say, we really do love working with others). Certifying for the first time isn’t the end by any means, it’s in fact just the beginning. Did you know that B Corps have to re-certify every 3 years? This is an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement and we wouldn’t have it any other way. As society’s needs shift and develop over time, we see huge value in having a framework to guide us in ensuring we’re always thinking about how we can be better at what we do and cause more of a positive impact on people and the planet.

So, what do you actually do at Projects to demonstrate your environmental and social commitments?

That’s a great question. Well, it's not just about us (the Projects’ team). It's about all of us—our members, our partners and our community. We're working towards net-zero emissions - we’ll be releasing our strategy in Q2 this year so stay tuned if you’re interested to learn more. Currently, we have targets we’re working towards that relate to reducing our carbon footprint and water consumption and increasing both our recycling and circular activities. We know that collaboration is key to reaching these goals and net-zero. From small changes in daily habits to big ideas that spark innovation, every little bit counts.

Sustainability can’t just become a buzzword – thinking sustainably has to become a way of life and we have taken it upon ourselves to make that easier for anyone who visits Projects. Before even opening our doors, we made sure our buildings were primed for eco-friendliness. Solar panels, energy-saving taps and lights and a commitment to green-powered electricity suppliers are just the start. With our partners at Recorra, we've embraced a zero-to-landfill policy. Our suppliers, from the amazing Redroaster Coffee (who deliver our B Corp certified beans by bike) to What The Crap loo roll (we’re sure you know them and love them already but if you’re yet to check them out then you can do so here), share our passion for the planet. Though planet friendly thinking is not just about products; it has to be about community. That's why we've teamed up with the inspiring people at the Better Business Network, hosting monthly breakfast events that bring together carbon-conscious entrepreneurs (the BBN run carbon literacy training online, check it out here if you’re interested in learning more). From sharing tips on sustainable living to indulging in B Corp certified treats (like Tony's delicious chocolate), we're building more than spaces – we're playing our part in building a movement.

When it comes to our social commitments, we're over the moon to support organisations like Together Co and The Trust for Developing Communities. Together, we can help them make a real difference in tackling loneliness, poverty and exclusion. It's partnerships like these that remind us of the importance of being part of something bigger than ourselves.

At Projects, we feel privileged to be able to nurture opportunities and inspire positive change.

What does the Projects’ team have to say about the movement they’re a part of?

They love it! Hear from them directly here:

"Being part of the B Corp movement isn't just a badge we wear; it's a commitment to doing right by our planet and our people." - Alana Harris, Brand Manager at Projects

"As we celebrate B Corp Month, let's raise a toast to the power of community and the magic of collective action!" - Matt Miller, Area Community Manager at Projects

"I am proud that we align with partners who share our values and vision for a better world. Being a B Corp allows us to forge meaningful connections with like-minded organisations who prioritise sustainability, ethics and community impact. It's not just about business transactions; it's about building relationships rooted in purpose and shared goals. Our B Corp status serves as a beacon, attracting partners who are not only aligned with our mission but are also eager to collaborate on projects that leave a positive mark on the world. It's more than a certification; it's a commitment to creating a better future, one partnership at a time." - Kyle Garland, Business Operations Manager

So, as we journey together towards a brighter, more sustainable future, let's keep the spirit of collaboration alive and kicking. After all, it's the little acts of kindness and the big dreams that truly make a difference. Here's to creating a world where work feels like home, and every day is a chance to make a difference. Cheers to that!

As we gear up to celebrate B Corp Month in March, we can't wait to connect with our local community and share our excitement for creating meaningful change together. Check out our upcoming events here and get in touch if you’d like to chat about anything mentioned in this blog.
